Overview

Diploma in Basic Concrete - Level 3 & Diploma in Excavation & Trenching - Level 4

Cement Your Knowledge about Basic Concrete, Excavation and Trenching!

If you are employed in the construction and engineering industry, or simply want to learn how to do your own construction work at home, this bundled course will equip you with the knowledge and skills necessary for that.

Concrete is a construction material that is used globally to build commercial and residential buildings. Its many advantages such as the increase in strength over time, cost-effectiveness, durability and energy efficiency has made it a desired choice over wood, and a mandatory skill to get into or progress within the construction and engineering industry.

If you came here wanting to master basic concrete, you are at the right place as this Diploma in Basic Concrete – Level 3 will enlighten you thoroughly on concrete and its application. This basic course will first relay the fundamentals of concrete, its properties and uses. You will then be briefed on the concrete that was used in the Roman period and on the Portland cement to give a background to the subject.

After learning about mineral admixtures and blended cements, this programme will educate you on concrete production, concrete slump test and concrete curing. The course will also focus on the environmental, safety and health issues related to concrete and on the hand mixing procedures of concrete to ensure a safe working environment. By the end of this course, you will have a significant basic knowledge on concrete to further your education or training in the subject.

Excavation and trenching are the procedures of digging up and creating excavations in the ground for various purposes. It can be dug up either to install underground infrastructure or to excavate ancient ruins. Either way, excavation and trenching procedures are risky activities that could turn fatal, which is why South London College has developed this Diploma in Excavation and Trenching – Level 4 to equip you with the relevant knowledge and skills needed to embark on a related career.

This course will extensively educate you on excavation facts, personal protection systems, and excavation and trenching guidelines that have to be followed while digging up the excavations. Since excavation and trenching is highly risky, it is vital for you to be aware of the excavation, trenching and confined space hazards. Therefore, this programme has also included a few modules that will focus on this aspect, along with an insight into the irritant (corrosive) atmosphere and soil classification.

The OSHA report that has to be followed by every employer will also be presented through this course, after which you will learn how to successfully handle an OSHA inspection. This course will also explain you about ladder safety, confined space safety, confined space entry programme, confined space entry permit, and confined space duties and responsibilities hence, ideal for anyone wishing to get into or progress within civil engineering or archeology.

These courses have been endorsed under the Quality Licence Scheme (QLS). This means that Imperial Learning Limited* has undergone an external quality check to ensure that the organisation and the courses it offers, meet defined quality criteria. The completion of this course alone does not lead to a regulated qualification* but may be used as evidence of knowledge and skills gained. The learner unit summary may be used as evidence towards recognition of prior learning if you wish to progress your studies in this subject. To this end, the learning outcomes of the course have been benchmarked at Level-4 against level descriptors published by QLS, to indicate the depth of study and level of demand/complexity involved in successful completion by the learner.

These courses have been designed by Imperial Learning Limited* to meet specific learners’ and/or employers’ requirements which cannot be satisfied through current qualifications.

QLS endorsement involves robust and rigorous quality audits by external auditors to ensure quality is continually met. A review of courses is carried out as part of the endorsement process.

FAQs

Study method describes the format in which the course will be delivered. At Reed Courses, courses are delivered in a number of ways, including online courses, where the course content can be accessed online remotely, and classroom courses, where courses are delivered in person at a classroom venue.

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. If you work in certain professions or for certain companies, your employer may require you to complete a number of CPD hours or points, per year. You can find a range of CPD courses on Reed Courses, many of which can be completed online.

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
